Radiation

Radiation of a natural origin has always been present in our environment and always will be.

Natural radioactive materials exist:

  • in the earth;
  • in the buildings we live in;
  • in the food we eat and water we drink; and.
  • in the air we breathe.

Even our bodies contain natural radioactivity.

There is no difference between the effects of radiation, whether it is emitted from natural or from artificial radioactive materials.

Radiation of artificial origin has been used since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Regulatory Services maintains a high level of knowledge and understanding about radiation issues.  Guidance notes are attached below giving specific guidance on radiation.  Please also see the 'more pages' on the right hand side.
