Do I need planning permission?
IMPORTANT
The rules about whether permission is needed to alter or extend your home have changed. The changes are very significant and relax the existing rules. If you are proposing to carry out work to your home, you should check the position first. There is advice on the Planning Portal. This includes an "Interactive House" which will help you to work out whether or not you need planning permission. Click here to access the Interactive House. As well as checking whether or not you need planning permission, you should make sure that you have any other permission you need. This may be approval under the Building Regulations or listed building consent, if the building is of historic interest. There may be covenants or other legal rights which could affect your proposal. Occasionally, we remove the normal rights people have to carry out development without the need for planning permission. These are known as "permitted development" rights. If in doubt, you should check the original planning permission decision document for your home. Alternatively, contact our development control team using this link.
