Litter bins
Litter bins
The council is responsible for keeping adopted highways clean and free of litter, within the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
We aim to keep our environment as pleasant as possible, and have a routine programme of cleansing which is supported by about 1,600 litterbins which are located throughtout the city. These litterbins are serviced and maintained at a programmed frequency which is equal to 7,800 individual litterbin emptyings per week.
Litterbins are sited based on the percieved need for them, e.g. a shopping area will require more litterbins than a residential street because more people use the area. We do not have the resources to empty all the litterbins in the city 2 or 3 times per day, so we set a frequency of emptying according to the need of the area and the amount of people who will be using the area on a regular basis.
What can you do with your litter
The litter problem in our city is not just the responsibility of the city council and we all have a responsibility to play our part and keep our city clean and tidy.
We can all do this by making sure we don't drop litter. If you have some litter and you cannot find a litterbin near you to put it into, put it in your pocket until you either find a litterbin or take it home with you and put in your home bin. DO NOT THROW IT ON THE FLOOR. Dropping litter is an offence for which an instant fixed penalty fine of £50 can be issued or a fine of upto £2,500 if the case goes before a magistrates court.
Litterbin problems
We make every effort to ensure that all the litterbins are serviced regularly, however, we don't always get it right. If you feel we have not emptied a litterbin at the right frequency, feel the bin is not being emptied often enough or if you think it could be more effective in another location, let us know and we will respond by getting one of our supervisors to investigate the situation and if needed make any adjustments needed to the service.
