Landfill
Landfill involves the final disposal of waste by placing it within voids in the ground.
Landfill can fall into two categories
- landfill as we know it by filling holes in the ground with waste and;
- landraising where waste is deposited above existing ground levels to create new land forms.
Both types are engineered in similar ways to ensure that there is no escape from pollutants within the site. The need to reduce the volumes of waste sent to landfill and the associated risk of pollution from these sites is one of the key drivers for changing the way we collect and dispose of our waste.
