National Food Safety Week

In 2005, there were nearly 80,000 reported cases of food poisoning in the UK.  Whilst these figures are down on those a decade ago, many more go unreported and therefore uninvestigated.

National Food Safety Week, is a specific period where we raise awareness of food hygiene in Stoke on Trent.

Officers provide food safety advice to communities and schools, and hold displays and events centering on the theme of the year.

The week highlights simple, everyday actions that can keep our food safe from the time it is bought until it is eaten.

The key messages are:

  • avoid spreading germs;
  • keep food safe;
  • keep raw and cooked foods apart;
  • wash hands thoroughly before and after touching food;
  • control temperatures;
  • keep kitchens clean; and
  • avoid waiting times between cooking, preparation and eating.

Whats happening this year?

Throughout the week of 9 - 13 June 2008 we will be out and about in the City's libraries encouraging children to make a model of a 'germ', and giving out food safety information.  We will also be working with local childminders.

A prize will be given to the overall winner, and the five finalists in each category will get a 'goody bag'.  Categories are for under 5's and under 11's.

To get involved come along to:

  • Meir Library, Sandon road on 9 June 10am to 12pm
  • Tunstall Library, The Boulevard on 12 June 10am to 12pm
  • City Central Library, Bethesda street on 13 June 9.30am to 11am

All entries must be taken to City Central Library on 13 June for the judging event at 11.30am.  Please see the attached instruction sheet on how to make 'your germ'.
