How to get rid of rubbish that is too big for the bin?
Waste and recycling sites
You can take your items to one of our two household waste and recycling sites. They are free if you live in the city.
Furniture collections
The Furniture Mine (tel : 01782 846111) will collect furniture that is in good condition and give it to people who are in need of the items.
Bulky waste collections
We will collect household furniture, furnishings and fittings which are too big or heavy for your bin. We collect items such as:

- Bedding
- Carpets
- Clothing
- Cookers
- Curtains

- Doors
- Gates
- Microwaves
- Sofas
- Tables
- Televisions
- Wardrobes
- Washing machines
Skip hire
Our skip hire service is an economical way of disposing of large quantities of rubbish, rubble or garden waste. Skips are available in a number of different sizes.
Hazardous items
We do not remove asbestos, tyres, batteries or gas bottles. Contact us for advice on how to dispose of these items.
How do I use the bulky waste collection service?
To use the bulky waste collection service simply ring our contact centre on 234234:
- Place your order
- Make your payment
- Leave your rubbish out for collection
What is the charge?
The charge for collecting items such as those listed above is:
- 1 to 10 items £10.00
- 11 to 20 items £20.00
- Over 20 items Contact us on 01782 234234 for an hourly rate quotation.Fridges and freezers £10.00 per item – whether separate or part of another bulky collection
- Loose materials, Garden waste, timber and other loose material must be in bags, rubble/tiles is restricted to a maximum of two bags. Each bag will count as one item – this is based on a standard bin bag size and each weighing less than 25kg (55lbs)
How do I place and pay for my order?
When placing your order, we need details of the items to be collected and the appropriate payment. Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
There are a number of ways that we can take your order. Choose the one that suits you.
By phone Call us on 234234 between 8am and 8pm with your list of items and credit or debit card details.
In person Take your list of items and a cheque or cash to your Local Centre or our Streetscene office, address shown below.
By post Send a list of items to be collected and a cheque or postal order to our Streetscene office, address shown below.
Where do I leave the rubbish for collection?
It should be left outside your house at the front of your property as close as possible to the agreed collection point. Please ensure that it is in one pile where we can get to it as easily as possible.
Items not listed on the order will not be collected unless prior arrangements have been made and, where necessary, additional fees have been paid.
When will it be collected?
We will inform you of the collection date once you have made your payment, items should be ready for collection by 7.30am on that date.
