City Catering is our in-house caterer serving meals in schools across the city.
Our fully-trained staff supply tasty homemade meals to more than 18,000 children daily, encouraging them to choose a balanced meal as well as providing breakfast and break service in many schools.
Our menus meet legislation for school food standards, while giving the best possible choice.
City Catering holds the Food for Life Silver Catering Award in those primary, special and nursery schools where the catering is provided by us.
Achieving the award is recognition that the meals we provide are healthy, nutritious, and at least 75 per cent home cooked. City Catering’s menus contains more than 90 per cent home-cooked dishes.
There are many other criteria which we have successfully met in achieving this award. Our meat is Farm Assured, organic, eggs are free range and fish is from sustainable stock.

Universal infant free school meals
Children in reception, year one or year two are entitled to a free school meal every day. Don’t miss out.
Secondary meal prices
Secondary schools offer a cash cafeteria system allowing customers to choose their lunch from a wide range.
Customer can make their meal choice from a range of dishes freshly prepared in time for service. These can be purchased as two course meal deal to offer further value for money – (main meal, dessert and drink).
Examples include: Traditional roast dinner, pasta in arrabiata sauce and sweet potato and chickpea curry.
Also available are hot and cold snack items such as filled wraps, tascas, baguettes and oatcakes. Salad boxes, homemade soup or jacket potatoes. These can be complemented with biscuits, yogurts, fruit and a varied drinks range which is fully compliant with school food legislation.
Most secondary schools also offer a breakfast and morning breaks sale service.
Meal deals are priced to the value of a free school meal to ensure that all customers have the opportunity to purchase a balanced meal. Alternatively, items up to the value of a meal deal can be purchased individually.

Free school meals
Please note that all enquires are confidential. You are entitled to free school meals for your family if you receive:
- Income Support
- Income-based Job Seeker Allowance
- Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
- The guarantee element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (but not if you also get Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income under £16,190; or
- If you are an asylum seeker supported by the UKBA under Part VI if the Nationality and Asylum Act 1999.
