North Staffordshire Profile
The following is a brief summary of the findings from the 2001 census taken from the Office of National Statistics.
For the purposes of analysis North Staffordshire is taken to be the local authority areas of Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands.
Population and demography
The 2001 census identified 457,155 persons resident in 192,733 households. A further 7,709 vacant household spaces were identified.
13.8% were of school age (5 to 15 years), and 21.8% were of pensionable age (over 60 years of age).
The average age of all residents was 39.3 years.
Females account for 51.3% of the population in the city.
96.5% were born in the UK.
Ethnicity and religion
96.6% described themselves as white. The Pakistani community made up 1.4% of the resident population, the Indian community 0.4% and the Caribbean community 0.2%.
77.4% described their religion as Christian and 1.8% as Muslim. 20.1% described themselves as having no religion or did not answer the question.
Health
17.4% of the working age population had a limiting long-term illness.
11.5% of the population described their health as "not good".
52,340 people provide unpaid care, 35.3% of these for 20 or more hours per week.
Marital status and household composition
Of all people aged 16 and over 28.2% were single (never married), 52.1% married / remarried, 10.2% separated / divorced and 9.3% widowed.
Of all households 9.8% were single parent households and 29.4% single person households, a further 38.3% were married couple households.
By lifecycle stage 24.7% of all households contained pensioners and 28.6% contained families with dependant children.
Accommodation type, tenure, and amenities
Of all households 69.9% were owner/occupiers, 14.0% rented from the city council, 6.1% from a housing association and a further 5.8% from a private landlord.
26.1% of properties were terraced, 43.7% were semi-detached and a further 21.7% were detached.
The average number of rooms per household was 5.25.
8.1% of households were without central heating.
28.5% of all households were without a car. This equated to 444 cars per 1,000 population, or 1052 cars per 1000 households.
Economic activity, employment and education
Of all persons aged 16-74 211,802 were economically active of which 191,796 (90.6%) were in employment either full-time, part-time or self-employed. A further 3.3% were unemployed.
Of the 122,010 described as economically inactive 40.2% are retired, 22.0% permanently sick / disabled and 15.8% looking after the home / family.
The main industries of employment were manufacturing (25.5%), wholesale and retail distribution (17.8%) and health, social work, education and public administration (21.8%).
19.1% of people are employed in managerial / professional occupations and 27.7% in routine / semi-routine occupations.
Of all people aged 16-74 38.7% have no qualifications and 12.6% have degree level qualifications or higher.
