Corporate Management of Property

Covering approximately 36 square miles, Stoke-on-Trent provides a home to around 238,000 people.

We currently use approximately 500 fixed property assets to deliver services to over 238,000 people in Stoke-on-Trent. The diversity of property is considerable. These include, but are not exclusive to:

  • Front line service properties delivering services directly to the public
  • Education establishments such as schools, youth and adult centres
  • Civic buildings such as town halls
  • Markets and shops
  • Leisure facilities
  • Social Services properties
  • Housing

We also own considerable areas of land such as parks and open spaces.

So that our property assets (excluding council housing) are managed as efficiently and effectively as possible, the responsibility for property lies with one directorate - Corporate Resources. The Corporate Resources directorate includes a specialist Property Services division which represents the "corporate property function" and as such all property-related decisions must be approved and co-ordinated by them.

A key document in the management of property is the corporate Asset Management Plan 2005-2008.  You can download a copy of the plan by going to the link on the right.

Asset Management Plan vision - " to consistently deliver excellence in asset performance"

The plan sets the strategic direction for all property-related issues.  It seeks to make best use of our property assets to maximise their contribution to corporate priorities through a corporate approach. The Asset Management Plan clearly identifies our strategic approach to managing, using, buying and disposing of our land and property assets.

In addition, the Property Services division is actively striving to implement new ways of providing customer focused service delivery. An example of this is creating joint service centres such as the one currently being built on the Bentilee estate. This is an example of a number of services being brought together to improve access to both council, health and social facilities.

Successful asset management planning relies upon the city council, its partners and communities working together in an atmosphere of co-operation, honesty, openness and trust. The Asset Management Plan provides ways in which we can all actively help in developing our assets in a co-ordinated and collaborative way.

Only through constructive and open discussion can short, medium and long term property development goals be achieved.
