The Data Protection Act 1998 was created to ensure that information about individuals is processed in accordance with the rights provided in the Act together with providing safeguards to prohibit any non-compliant or unauthorised processing.
Sometimes the information must be shared between specified parties, before any information is released legal agreements must be implemented with the use of the Data Sharing Manual. The manual can be viewed via the link at the bottom of this page.
The Act itself provides individuals with the specific right to:-
- know what information is being held about them,
- know what their information is being used for and why,
- know where the information came from and who has accessed it,
- request access to their information,
- take action to block, rectify, erase or destroy inaccurate data.
The Act applies to all individuals including members of the public, Elected Members and employees of the city council.
