Voluntary Work
Voluntary Work within Youth Offending Services
The Youth Offending Services commissioned Spurgeons to provide voluntary and support services through AXIS. AXIS works with children and young people aged between 8 - 19 years, to prevent and reduce offending and to promote positive life opportunities including independent living skills, education and training.
These services are made up of:
- Mentors to be reliable role models for young people. Mentors work with children and young people at risk of offending/already involved in the Criminal Justice System and/or in Local Authority - Children and Young People's Services.
- Appropriate Adults to accompany young people alleged to have offended at Police interviews. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 Appropriate Adults will attend local police stations when a parent/carer is unable to do so. This service operates during the hours of 9am - 10pm, 365 Days a year.
- Referral Order Panel members. Referral Orders are issued to children and young people aged 10-17 years old who are first time offenders pleading guilty in court. These children and young people are brought before a Youth Offender Panel made up of a Youth Offending Team Officer and three volunteers.
- Volunteers are at the heart of the success of these services and AXIS is always looking for members of the public to become volunteers. If you wish to have an informal chat about any of the above voluntary services please call the number below:
