Age Equality Policy Statement and Legislation

Policy Statement

Ageism can defined as any negative action or attitude that discriminates against a person or group on the basis of their age. These stereotypes are based on 'perceived' opinion of an individual's ability and potential. Ageism is usually targeted against older or younger people. To stop this we will make sure services are delivered in a way that takes account of the needs of all service users irrespective of age, paying specific attention to the needs of youth groups and older people's groups.

We will try to develop access to decision making through the committee structure, supporting self-organised groups and involving young and older people when we consult. We will adopt the voluntary code of practice on anti-age discrimination and will work with the Local Strategic Partnership Young Persons Forum and the Older People's Assembly.

Legislation

Age Discrimination Regulations will come into effect on 1 October 2006. It makes direct and indirect discrimination on the grounds of age unlawful except where direct discrimination can be justified on specified grounds. Mandatory retirement ages will be allowed only when they can be justified by the employer.

We have also signed up to the Equality Standard for Local Government. This commits us to improving equality practice in employment and service delivery.
