In Approved Premises
Local authorities are now able to licence other places for civil marriages provided that they are suitable. These are known as approved premises and generally include hotels, stately homes and other historic buildings. The ceremony is conducted by staff from the Register Office. You can get married in any approved premises in any district in England and Wales. You will however still need to give notice of marriage in the districts where you live. A full list of all approved premises in England and Wales can be obtained from the General Register Office (www.statistics.gov.uk). A list of local venues is normally available free of charge from each register office.

If you are getting married in approved premises you should first contact the owners of the property. This is to ensure that the date that you have chosen is available. You must also contact the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you want to marry. This is to confirm that you can be married on the date and at the time you have chosen.
