Legal Preliminaries to Marriage

You may marry at any register office or approved premises of your choice in England and Wales.

Before you marry you must both give notice of your intention to marry in the district in which you live or have lived for the preceding seven days. The notices must be displayed on the notice board for 15 clear days before the Superintendents Registrar's authority may be issued and the marriage can take place.

The notice states where you wish to marry and is valid for twelve months.

You must give notice in person.

As the notice is a legal statement signed by you, a relative or friend can not give notice on your behalf, nor can it be done by telephone.

In Stoke-on-Trent notices can be given Monday to Friday between 8.45am - 4.30pm.  You will need to make an appointment to do this.

Please contact us to arrange this, or for more information.  Click here for our contact details.
