Street Cafe

Street cafés can add to our city's vibrant street scene.  If well thought out they can help to create a positive image of the city.

If you wish to place street café furniture on the highway outside your property you need to get a licence.  If you need more information, or you would like to apply for a licence, please follow one of the links on the left.

When completing an application we will need:

  • a copy of your public liability insurance with a minimum cover £5 million;
  • two location maps - scaled 1:1250 and 1:500;
  • a site plan showing positioning and dimensions; and
  • payment of the relevant fee.

More details are available in our design guide and application pack.

If you want to put a café on land that is not highway then you do not need a street café licence.

If you need to check if the land is highway, please contact the Highway's Network Team.  If the land is not highway you may still need planning permission, please contact the Planning Permission's Team for guidance.

If you need any further information please contact Licensing Services.
