What is the Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme?

Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) aims to provide access to Short Breaks to enable children and young people with disabilities to enjoy ordinary life activities.

Short Break purpose and definition

Short breaks are specifically provided to give:

  • Disabled children and young people enjoyable experiences away from their primary carers - which helps to increase social inclusion and personal and social development.
  • Parents and families a necessary and valuable break from caring responsibilities enabling them to undertake training, leisure opportunities, self-care activities and spend time with their other children.
  • Short breaks include breaks in the day, evening, overnight and weekend, which can take place in the child's or young person's own home, the home of the approved carer, or in a residential or community setting
  • A short break is classed as a few hours (min 3hrs) to a few days (or more) depending on the needs of the child or their family

Priority and target groups:
Those children and young people who have recognised severe disabilities through previous assessments and in the groups below:

Group A: Children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (who have severe learning disabilities or behaviour which is challenging) OR those children and young people whose challenging behaviour is associated with other impairments such as severe learning disabilities.
