CRB Umbrella Body Service

Stoke on Trent City Council offers an Umbrella Body Service which is a reliable and professional approach to completing Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks for other organisations/third parties.

The City Council operates an Umbrella Body Service alongside its Registered Body Service which deals with thousands of CRB disclosures each year, giving us significant experience and understanding of the process.

A CRB check currently costs £44 + an administration fee of £9.50 (+VAT).

If you are interested in using our Umbrella Body Service please telephone 01782 238193 or email jayne.viggars@stoke.gov.uk . You will be asked the nature of your business and the reasons why you require a CRB disclosure to ensure you are eligible.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am self-employed, how do I get a CRB check?

Current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check, as they cannot ask an exempt question of themselves. It is for the recruiting organisation asking the exempt question to assess an applicant's suitability.

However the following options are available:

  • a self-employed person can apply for a CRB check by registering with an agency;
  • individuals are able to obtain a basic check from our colleagues at Disclosure Scotland. This provides individuals with details of any 'unspent' convictions
  • alternatively, individuals are able to make a 'subject access' request to their local police force under the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998. This will provide up-to-date details of any criminal records in the UK.

For further clarification please contact the CRB direct on 0870 90 90 811.
