Cyclists wanting to improve their confidence are being encouraged to take part in training courses across the city.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s safe and sustainable transport team are providing a number of summer cyclist training camps starting this August for children and adults around the city.
The aim of the camps is to get more people cycling safely and on a regular basis. The training camps are being held in locations across Stoke-on-Trent including leisure centres, parks, Westport Lake, Staffordshire University, The Civic Centre, the chamber of commerce and Stoke City Football Club.
The cycling camps programme begins with a learning to ride training camp at 9:30am for children aged 5-7, followed by a Level 1 training course at 11:30am for 7-9 year olds, finishing with a level 2 course at 1:30pm for 9-16 year olds on Wednesday August 8, 2012 at Westport Lake.
Further courses, such as cycling confidence for women, learning to ride camps for adults and advanced training for cycling commuters, are also planned in August, September, October and finish with a New Year cyclist training camp for children who have received new bikes at Christmas.
Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transportation said: “We have a proud record of cyclist training in our city, particularly in schools. Over the last three years the city council has provided cyclist training to 8,500 children and adults in Stoke-on-Trent. The cycling confidence camps, being short in length, fit well with families with busy lives and with the training camps being free, is also a welcomed bonus.”
A cycling confidence camps training leaflet has been produced and is available from cycle dealers, libraries, children and local centres and the Civic Centre Stoke.
