Stoke on Trent City Council and Ormiston Horizon Academy will mark 100 days to the opening of the Olympics with the launch of 550 purple and blue balloons next week.

Athlete and Olympic prospect Emma Jackson will release the balloons at the event with each balloon symbolising an individual child at the academy.

A mini Olympics with students from the academy and local primary schools will also take place during the day with Emma presenting the prizes. In the afternoon, from 4pm, the sporting facilities will be opened up to the local community with a hog roast, music and free sports activities. There will also be the opportunity for residents to sample, for free activities, including Zumba, football, boxing, basketball and swimming. Fitzy Fox, the mascot from a scheme designed to encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle, will also be present.

Councillor Mark Meredith, cabinet member for economic development, said: “To be just 100 days from the Olympic Games is an exciting prospect for the whole of the country. In Stoke-on-Trent we are even closer to that Olympic experience as we welcome the Flame to the city in just 42 days time! Ormiston Horizon Academy and the city council are extremely proud to mark this momentous occasion and keep the momentum of the Games movement in full swing in Stoke-on-Trent.”

The event will also celebrate the official partnership between the academy and the city council of the New Horizons sports and leisure facilities on the academy campus.

The New Horizons facilities will form part of the campus, which will be completed when the Ormiston Horizon Academy building is finished in July 2013.

Rod Hughes, Principal of Ormiston Horizon Academy, added: “We are delighted to be celebrating the partnership with the city council. We have made outstanding progress since opening in September, with recording breaking GCSE results and improved attendance. It is also fitting that our core values are Respect, Excellence and Friendship – are based upon the Olympic values.”

Stoke-on-Trent is one of just 66 venues for the Torch Relay's evening celebration across the UK confirmed by the London 2012 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Torch will arrive in the city on Wednesday May 30, and leave on Thursday May 31, 2012.
