249-08 City speed signs are to be on display for the first time

State-of-the-art mobile speed indication signs will be in Stoke-on-Trent for the first time as speeding motorists are urged to slow down.

The signs, which can be moved around the city, measure the speed of approaching vehicles and display it on electronic boards.  When they are unveiled on Monday 28 July they will be used in Hartshill Road and Millrise Road first before being moved around the city every three to four weeks.

Cllr Joan Bell, Stoke-on-Trent City Council portfolio holder for Community Safety, said: “These devices are expected to dramatically reduce traffic speeds around the city and will be a first for Stoke-on-Trent. Nationally, excessive speed contributes to 12 per cent of all collisions which result in injury. Anything which can be done to reduce speed across the city is worth while."

The signs are battery operated and so can be moved to locations throughout the city. The decision on where they will be located depends on the number of road traffic accidents involving speed and the community concern over speeding traffic. It is hoped that by flashing up motorists speed the devices will shock drivers in to slowing down
